I have had the same Elite selective door since 2008. The only time I used the second disc that was included was when I couldn't find the cat's collar. Once I found the collar, I resumed with the original disc. It is just now, 7 years later that I am using the second disc and ordering a back up.

The tag detection appears to wear off over time and I've only had the tag on my cat's collar for about a month. Following set up, it appeared to be working fine but in the last week, I've had to put the flap in training mode because the door would not unlock and then eventually stopped detecting the disc.

I tried this cat door and collar tags after years of using the magnetic ones--which failed after a few years. My old cats NEVER lost their collars, but at 16 years old, they passed away last year. Our new kitty (one year old) LOVES his cat door, but has managed to pull TWO collars off already--so I'm ordering more tags. This tag is lighter than the magnetic ones and my cat(s) seem to like having their own, private entrance.

these, in combination with the cat mate elite super selective cat flap, keep the raccoons out of my kitchen and make sure my cat stays in at night. i use a break away collar on my cat so she looses it about every 6 months, which means i have to keep a stash of extra electronic ID discs on hand, but it's worth it for the peace of mind. i just wish the ID discs weren't so big.

Like the other reviewers, I wish the tag were smaller and less expensive. Otherwise the concept is terrific and it wrks as described. Darn kitten keeps losing his collar, though!

The Cat Mate electronic door and door tags work very well, but getting the cats to not lose them is another problem. Programming the door to recognize the tag is a little troublesome, but it works. PetGuys offered replacement tags at an extremely good price with fast shipping and service. Both this product and PetGuys are highly recommended.

Love how my cats can come and go. Our door is a metal one, so my cats do have to get close before the door will open.

The disk works great....now we just have to get the cat to stop losing them in our woods.
